How to Get music into Walkman phone

The Sony Ericsson Walkman phones are great, but it's not always obvious how to get music onto them. We take you through the checks you need to make before installing the software, how the software works and give you some troubleshooting tips.

Tip 1: Installing the software

Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones are a popular choice among music fans who want the convenience of a combined mobile phone and MP3 player. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to figure out how to get music onto the phones. In this article we'll take you through, step by step, how to install and use the software and we'll give you some troubleshooting tips.

System requirements

Before getting started, you need to check whether your computer will be able to run the Sony Ericsson PC suite and Disc2Phone software. Start by checking if you have enough space left on your hard drive and you need at least 400MB. To check your hard drive capacity on a Windows PC, click on the Windows Start menu and select My Computer; right click on your hard drive (usually labelled C:) and select Properties from the drop-down menu. The following window, which shows how much space is left on your hard drive, will pop up. You also need to make sure that you have compatible hardware and are running a compatible operating system. Sony Ericsson provides information on its Web site detailing the requirements of the PC Suite and Disc2Phone software. If you're not sure what Windows Service Packs (SP) you have installed, or how fast your processor is, right click on the My Computer icon in the Start menu and select Properties. The following window, which shows what operating system and processor you are using, will pop up. Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 SP4 and other service packs can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site. If your processor is too slow, you can buy a new one and install it, or you can take your computer to a repair shop and ask then to upgrade it.

Before you connect your Walkman phone to your computer, make sure you have installed the right software. The box that your handset came in should contain a CD that allows you to install the software you'll need to put music on your phone. If you've lost the CD, you can download the software from the Sony Ericsson Web site. The first application you need to install is the Sony Ericsson PC Suite. This program ensures that your computer will recognise the Walkman phone and allow the two devices to communicate. When you start installing this software, it should display the following window.

Sony Ericsson's PC Suite is essential if you want to transfer music to your phone using the Disc2Phone software, and also lets you move content between your computer and your phone. Unfortunately, you cannot transfer e-mails, multimedia messages or text messages from your phone, but you can transfer photos or synchronise your contacts. When you run PC Suite you'll see a Disc2Phone icon. This is the software that lets you put music onto your phone, but before you click on it, you need to first install it from the CD.

Install Disc2Phone software

To install the Disc2Phone software, go back to the window that opened when you put the installation CD into your computer's drive and click on the Disc2Phone install link. Or, if you have lost the disc, you can find the software on the Sony Ericsson Web site. Follow the step-by-step instructions to install the application (see window below). You will also be asked to install Gracenote's software during the installation process. This software provides a music recognition service, which enables information on the track to be displayed on your phone's screen when you play it. You must be connected to the Internet to initially download this information.

Connect your phone

After following the first three steps you are now ready to connect your phone to your computer. It is recommended that you use a USB cable to ensure the connection is fast and secure. This cable should come in the box -- if it doesn't, you can purchase it at most major mobile phone shops. When you first connect the phone you'll have to wait until Windows recognises the device. A bubble will pop up in the bottom right corner of the screen saying the computer has found new hardware, and it will then automatically search for the correct drivers. Drivers are pieces of software that let your device, in this case a mobile phone, communicate with your computer.

Once it says your hardware is installed (see above) then you are ready to start using Disc2Phone.
